In this lecture, Dr Michael Wesley, Executive Director, Lowy Institute for International Policy, examines what the China boom means for Australia. Questions he will consider include: What is the importance of prosperity to Australians relative to the other values we hold? Do the means to prosperity matter? Do the sources of our prosperity affect our politics and how we see the world?

This lecture will describe IBM’s role in inventing and shaping a new industry and science of information. It will explore why this new science is relevant for 21st century leaders, looking at the period of transformation that’s taken place, and more importantly, what is to come. Knowing that technological advancement and scientific discovery is complex, iterative, and continually evolving, Dr John Kelly III will offer a view about particular technologies that will change the world in the decade to come, and share examples of how IBM is exploring smarter natural resource management, smarter natural disaster management, and collaborating on computational life sciences.

From Toilet to Tap: The technology, the benefits and the challenges around water recycling

In this free public talk, Professor Peter Scales (University of Melbourne) will explore the technology of water recycling, the benefits to a growing population and the key concerns around a break with traditional practices. Melbourne MP Adam Bandt (The Greens) and Professor Michael Porter (Alfred Deakin Research Institute) will complement the discussion by providing political and public policy perspectives on the issues at stake
