More information

Dr Martin trained as a doctor in Delhi and graduated from the Lady
Hardinge Medical College in 1985 with a postgraduate diploma in
Paediatrics. Shortly after this, she began working voluntarily to
contain a cholera outbreak in the Dr Ambedkar Basti slum in the south of
the city.

Originally working single-handedly at a borrowed table
outside the slum, Dr Martin went on to create a community health and
development society that has transformed the lives of over 300,000 slum
