Brotherton Lecture 2009 – Shaking Hands with a Serial Killer
Speaker: Professor David Winter, University of Hertfordshir
Date: Wednesday 28 October 2009
Location: Carillo Gantner Theatre
Time: 6.30pm
Psychologists sometimes advocate taking a ‘credulous attitude’, in
which the client’s perspective is ‘always right’ or inherently valid.
Essentially, an attempt is made to see the world though the other
person’s eyes. However, are there any limits to such an approach? For
example, to what extent is it possible, and useful, to take a credulous
attitude to the serial killer or the person who has committed other
offences of extreme violence? In considering such questions, this talk
will draw upon a range of material, from narratives written by serial
killers to data collected from former child soldiers.
