Chief researcher
On August 25, Melbourne University’s Centre for Advanced Journalism launched the publication of its landmark study exploring the experiences and reflections of survivors who were covered by the media in the aftermath of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.
‘Black Saturday: In the Media Spotlight’ includes our
research into the experiences of journalists, broadcasters,
photographers and editors involved in reporting on the fires and their
aftermath. Both stages of this research represent a major contribution
to the vital discussion - a discussion which has only just begun - about
disaster reporting and its impact on victims and survivors.
The centre’s Director and former Age
editor, Michael Gawenda and the chief researcher, Dr Denis Muller will
deliver a short presentation on the findings of the latest stage of the
research, ‘The Survivor Stories’ at the launch.
